History of the Romanian Language

Romanian is an Indo-European language derived from Latin. It is one of the primary members of the eastern group of Romance Languages, spoken by close to 30 million people mainly in Romania and Moldova. It is very similar to Italian, French, Portuguese and Spanish. It is the official language in Romania, Republic of Moldova and the Autonomous territory of Vojvodina and Serbia. The language is officially called limba moldoveneasca in the Republic of Moldova mainly for political reasons.

The speakers of the Romanian language are spread across many countries, particularly Italy, Israel, Portugal, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, France, United States, Russia and Ukraine.

When the Romanians came under the reign of the Byzantine Empire, all the dialects of Romanian were unified in a Proto-Romanian language between the 7th and 10th centuries. It was then when Romanian had come under the influence of Slavic languages and also Greek to some extent.

There was a sporadic warfare between the Dacians and the Romans from the 1st century B.C. onwards as a result of which the Romanian territory was colonized by the Dacian, a group of Indo-European people. There are many words that have originated from Greek, Slavic and the Turkish language. The Romanian linguist made an attempt to re-Latinize their language during the 17th century as it had many Slavic words, however, this process continued until the 19th century. The Cyrillic alphabet was used until it was reinstated by the Latin alphabet towards the end of the 19th century. Vulgar Latin then became the primary language of commerce and administration.

Romanian was among the first of the romance Languages that separated itself from Latin due to its geographical remoteness so the grammar is roughly similar to that of Latin unlike other Romance languages. It was influenced by other Romance languages until the mid 18th century, as a result of which it came to be known as one of the most uniform languages in Europe.
